Swiss biodiversity strategy and action plan
At the sustainability summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, Switzerland and numerous other countries around the world signed the Convention on Biological Diversity. The member states, now numbering 197 (as of May 2017), have set themselves the goal of ensuring the conservation of ecosystems and their function, as well as species and genetic diversity. This is necessary to meet the needs of current and future generations. Among other things, the agreement provides for the development of national strategies for the conservation of biodiversity. At the 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10, Aichi-Nagoya, Japan) in October 2010, the Strategic Plan on Biodiversity 2011-2020 was adopted. This includes, among other things, strategic goals, the so-called Aichi goals, and serves the individual states as a framework for efficient and coherent implementation of the convention.
All of Switzerland’s stakeholders were invited to participate in drawing up the action plan, andg FREETHEBEES represented the wild honey bee and its natural habitat. On September 6, 2017, the Federal Council adopted the action plan for the biodiversity strategy.
