To date, the question of whether the western honey bee Apis mellifera survives in the wild in its natural European environment remains to be resolved. What is clear is that managed honey bees are threatened by various well-known causes, since honey bees are the most studied insects in the world. With the current mass extinction of biodiversity, isn’t it time to invest also in research and conservation of unmanaged honey bees?
