The Mismanagement of Bees is Institutionalised
Beekeeping umbrella association apisuisse
The beekeeping umbrella association that governs beekeeping is using obsolete objectives. That is to say, honey production using a livestock mindset remains in the focus of apisuisse statutes.
From an economical and ecological perspective, the more important pollination function that bees provide is not part of their objectives.
Neither is the conservation of existing stocks of feral honey bees which is important for species conservation, genetic security and adaptability.
There is no mention of sustainable honey yields in the statutes, instead the economical interests of beekeepers are the primary focus.
Federal Office for Agriculture FOAG
The confederate research center Agroscope is part of the Federal Office for Agriculture.
Following their own statement Agroscope pursues <> together with the center for bee research center (BRC) that is focused on optimization of livestock and yield.
The corresponding results of research are as a consequence unilateral and so are the succeeding measures for beekeeping in practice.
As the focus is on yield, so are their beekeeping practice recommendations.
This narrow production orientated view is not holistic, and does not consider all aspects of bee health.
Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO
Swiss veterinary focuses on control and treatment of livestock according to current regulations.
The point is that bees are not comparable with livestock, they are not domesticated and can not be contained.
Honey bees are in interaction with their environment over a wide radius of flight distance.
The FOEN’s attention is focused on the treatment of symptoms, there are apparently no efforts towards the remedying of underlying causes.
Federal Office for the Environment FOEN
The FOEN currently has priorities that differ from the needs of honey bees.
As long as pollination is assured and honey bees keep on flying there is no immediate reason for action to the FOEN.
